Insectival is back at the Garden. Join the Garden staff and volunteers for a creepy, crawly, and fun on a Saturday morning. Discovery stations, roach and beetle races, puppet shows, and of course lots and lots of live insects, along with our 3rd annual butterfly release. Insectival is Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 9:30 am till 12:30 pm. The butterfly release is at 11 am. Admission is $3.00 per person or a maximum of $10 per family. Insectival is sponsored by the The State Botanical Garden, Georgia Museum of Natural History, UGA Lund Club, and UGA Department of Entomology.

The Garden Fall Plant Sale is just around the corner. This year's plant sale will feature shrubs and trees that require less water to survive. Also available will be native perennial plants proagated and grown by the Garden's plant conservation department. The sale will be Saturday, October 4, 2008.

The Garden's Medicianl Plant Symposium is Wednesday, October 15, 2008 from 8:45 am till 3:00 pm. This daylong seminar will explore a variety of medicianl plants and some of the beliefs that guide their use. Topics include use and cultivation of medicinal plants native to the southeast, important Latin American herbs, current research concerning the health benefits of phytochemicals, and much more.

Starting October 12, 2008, the art exhibit Nature's Elegance will be on display in the Visitor Center. Local artist and painting instructor B.B. Miller shares this collection of botanical paintings. The opening reception is Sunday, October 12, 2008 from 1:30 pm till 3:30 pm.

Construction on the new Flower Garden is complete. Thie completion comes after several delays caused by a number of different issues. As a result of these delays, planting of the garden will begin this fall and continue into the early winter. The garden is open for visitors to walk through, but many planting areas will not be completed till the spring.

Winners of the 2008 Student Art Competition are on display in the Garden Visitor Center and Conservatory. The winners were: Jessica Bolfik 1st Place, Sutawee N. Thitaram 2nd Place, Amy Michel 3rd Place. Come out an view these wonderfull works while on display. Winning artwork will also be used to create signature items for the Gift Shop

Certificate in Native Plants. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia in cooperation with the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance will begin offering a certificate program in native plants beginning in the Fall of 2007. This program will offer a comprehensive series of short couses in identification, cultivation, propagation, ecology and conservation of native Georgia plants. This program is appropriate for home gardeners and enthusiasts, as well as green industry professionals, conservationists, and professionals in land, resource, and park management fields.
