Art in the Garden
Art takes many forms at the State Botanical Gardensculptures, paintings, fountains and other forms of artistic expressionand can be found throughout the entire Garden. A sampling includes:

Copper
Fountain (left) and Flame (right)
One of the first pieces of artwork installed in the Garden is a small copper fountain near the entrance to the Callaway Building. A composition of aquatic plants, stems and flowers, it was created by Lloyd Florence and was a gift to the Garden from the Ladies' Garden Club.
A bronze piece added to the Garden's collection in 2006 is titled Flame. It was a gift to the Garden by the artist, Sergio Dolfi, whose work can be found in numerous public and private collections both here and abroad.

La Grazia Dello Stelo (left) and Peace (right)
La Grazia Dello Stelo (The Graceful Stem) graces the pool located on the Mathis Plaza. The sculpture, carved from Carrara marble, is by John Kehoe and was a gift to the Garden by the William A. Mathis family.
Peace, a bronze sculpture by Gary Price, is the focal point of Freedom Plaza which honors the heroic men and women many of whom gave their lives in events surrounding September 11, 2001. The sculpture was a gift from Sarah Evelyn Thrasher and Lucie Thrasher Bryant in memory of family members.

Field Trip
A bronze composition near the front of the Visitor Center is titled Field Trip. It consists of six life-size children engaged in typical field trip activities under the watchful eye of an adult teacher. The sculptures by Gregory Johnson were a special purchase funded by the Board of Advisors, Friends of the Garden and other individual donors.

Day Chapel doors
The interior doors leading into the Day Chapel sanctuary are themselves a work of art. The carved mahogany and glass doors were done by Ann and Timothy Sutherland and depict the Cherokee Rose, Georgia's state flower, and dogwood, a native tree with religious connotations.

Clute's Kugel
Clute's
Kugel was given in memory of Clute Barrow Nelson. Our Kugel (from
the German word for ball) is a perfectly balanced and polished black granite
sphere, slightly over two feet in diameter and weighing 816 pounds, which
fits into a socket (base) carved to the exact curvature of the ball. The
Kugel revolves 360 degrees in all directions and actually floats on a
thin film of water. Once started, the ball continues to spin until someone,
even a child, stops it, changes the direction of its spin, or sets it
on an accelerated twirl. Because of its location overlooking the International
Garden, a world map is engraved on its surface.
The Garden Club of Georgia state headquarters building houses a collection of art, antique furniture and other fine furnishings. Of particular note is a very fine porcelain collection. This house museum is available for tours by appointment.

Art Exhibitions at the Garden
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia hosts art exhibitions that foster appreciation for botanical and natural beauty. Exhibitions range from paintings by local and national artists, to Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibitions, to special exhibitions such as glass crystal flowers by FRÄBEL. Artwork is exhibited in the lobby of the Alice Hand Callaway Visitor Center & Conservatory. Exhibitions typically last from four to five weeks.
Exhibitions at the Garden must have a botanical, horticultural, or nature-related theme. Two-dimensional framed pieces (paintings, drawings, and photographs) are best suited to the exhibition space, but other media will be considered. The exhibition should consist of original works.
For more information about exhibiting at the State Botanical Garden, please submit a short bio/resume, an artist statement, and examples of your artwork (slides, photos, or originals) for review by our Selection Committee. Review of photographs or slides representative of art to be exhibited is necessary even if an artist has previously exhibited at the Garden. Returning artists must wait a minimum of three years between exhibitions.
You may mail this information or schedule an appointment to come by in person. If you choose the latter, you must leave examples of your work for review by the Selection Committee. The Garden reserves the right to reject all or any part of an exhibition. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for the committee to respond. Questions and submissions should be mailed to the following address:
