The main campus of the
University of Georgia, located in downtown
Athens, covers 605 acres and includes 313 buildings. The campus
adjoins the historic commercial section of
Athens
on its
northern boundary. Athens features many boutiques, restaurants,
churches, entertainment businesses, and service businesses.
Travel to Athens by road from Atlanta
takes approximately 1.5 hours.
The University covers 4,308 acres in Clarke County and owns a total of 43,261 acres throughout the state. (See the UGA Campus Maps.) Visitors may obtain information at the Visitors Center, located in the Four Towers Building on East Campus (Call (706) 542-0842). Prospective undergraduate students planning a visit to campus may wish to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in Terrell Hall. Prospective graduate students planning a visit may wish to contact the Office of Graduate Admissions in the Boyd Graduate Studies Building.
An admission interview is
not part of the University of Georgia admission process. However, we
urge you and your
family to visit with us in Athens to help with your college choice
decision, if you have not
already done so. University admission counselors meet with visiting
prospective students
and their families at hour-long Admission Information Counseling

Visitors CenterThe Visitors Center, located in the Four Towers Building on East Campus, is open seven days a week to assist visitors to campus. The Visitors Center is closed on official university holidays.Campus ToursIn addition to an introductory virtual tour, tours of campus are conducted seven days a week by student tour guides. Reservations are required to participate in a campus tour. Tours are not conducted on official university holidays. To make a tour reservation, call (706) 542-0842.ParkingVisitors may obtain free parking passes from Parking Services, located off East Campus Road [ Map]. Passes can be used in any ungated lot on campus. Visitors' parking spaces designated in green are for short-term parking and only for the specific building where they are located. Parking permits for these spaces may be obtained inside each building.There are also two pay lots on the campus: the University Bookstore/Tate Student Center and the parking deck beside the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, both of which may be entered from Lumpkin Street.

BusesVisitors to campus are welcome to ride the campus transit system, one of the largest and safest campus bus systems in the nation. There is no charge. Buses operate only on days when classes are in session. Buses run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with limited night service available. Schedules for campus and Athens city routes are available at the Tate Student Center information desk and the Visitors Center.
Campus Sights to See
The Arch and Historic North CampusServing as the entry to the campus from the City of Athens, the Arch on Broad Street has become the symbol of the University of Georgia. It stands on beautiful North Campus with a host of historic buildings including the Chapel, Old College, Terrell Hall, Demosthenian and Phi Kappa Halls and the Academic Building. The Founders Memorial Garden, honoring the world's first garden club, is also located on North Campus. For more information about the garden phone (706) 542-3631.
Georgia Museum of ArtFounded in 1945, the University art museum was designated the state museum of art in 1982. More than 7,000 works are included in the museum's permanent collection, with primary emphasis on 19th- and early 20th- century American art. Exhibitions include works from the museum's permanent collection and major travelling shows. The museum has a new home in the magnificent Performing and Visual Arts Complex, located on East Campus. Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and StudiesThe Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, housing the collections of more than 80 public figures, is the only repository in Georgia devoted solely to scholarly research of modern political history. It is located in the University's Main Library Building on North Campus. (The Main Library is one of several libraries in the University of Georgia Libraries System.) Visitors are welcome; however, advance notice from groups and researchers is appreciated. The library is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, phone (706) 542-5788.
State Botanical GardenLocated along the Oconee River to the south of the main campus, The State Botanical Garden of Georgia encompasses 312 acres and features miles of winding trails. Small individual gardens are devoted to different plant varieties and habitats. The garden's focal point is the magnificent conservatory, where tropical and semi-tropical plants grow along an indoor stream. This building houses a gift shop and the Garden Room cafe, which serves lunch. Next to the conservatory, the International Garden features the gardens of the world. The Day Chapel, with a banquet room and kitchen downstairs, is available for weddings and other special events. The garden is located at 2450 South Milledge Ave., about two miles south of the main campus. Except for a few national holidays, the garden is open seven days a week. Garden hours are 8 a.m. to dusk daily; conservatory hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. For more information call (706) 542- 1244.
Collegiate Tennis Hall of FameGreat American collegiate tennis players and coaches are honored in the Hall of Fame, which is located at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, site of many NCAA tennis championships. The building is usually open 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Call (706) 542-9348 to schedule a visit.
Butts-Mehre Heritage HallMemorable moments in the University's rich athletic history are highlighted in the display areas of this building. Exhibits include retired Bulldog football jerseys, the Heisman Trophies won by Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker, and the National Championship Trophy. Tickets to most UGA athletic events can be purchased at the ticket office in the Butts-Mehre building.
