Inter-Disciplinary Programs
Gerontology
Students with interests in aging may earn a Certificate in Gerontology, concurrently with their work toward either a Master of Arts or a Doctorate in Sociology. The basic requirements for the Certificate are completion of at least 15 semester hours of course work in aging (five courses one of which must be Seminar in Aging GRNT 6000) and an approved thesis, research activity, special problems or field placement (for a total of 18 credit hours). The remaining four courses may be chosen by the student from an approved list. Currently, the Sociology Department offers one graduate course that may be used to satisfy the Gerontology Program's requirements (SOC 6650: Sociology of Aging).
Nonprofit Organizations
The Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Organizations is for graduate students in other majors who complete four of the core courses in the nonprofit curriculum. This certificate program will help meet the need for understanding the nonprofit organizations that provide employment for many graduates. The program consists of a minimum of four courses of 3 semester hours each, drawn from the core courses of the Master's degree curriculum of the Institute. In some cases, one of the courses toward the Certificate may come from a different field if the relationship to the nonprofit sector, issues, or management is clear. Students must be pursuing a graduate degree in some other college of UGA to apply for this certificate program.
Qualitative Studies
The Interdisciplinary Qualitative Graduate Certificate Program is an educational program to advance interdisciplinary inquiry through the pluralistic use of multiple methods. It seeks to generate knowledge for improving professional practice and advancing human understanding. The certificate requires 15 semester hours of credit, including participation in at least one research seminar, and the successful defense of a dissertation that uses qualitative research methods or a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. All students must complete 9 hours of core courses, from the three clusters of required courses outlined on this page. The 3-hour Integrative Qualitative Research Seminar is designed to assist students in integrating learning from the various qualitative research methods courses. This seminar is the forum for students to discuss and critique research and dissertation proposals, as well as problem-solve research dilemmas.
Women's Studies
The Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies is available to students who are currently pursuing a graduate degree or who already have a graduate degree. The purpose of the certificate is to expose students to the rapidly expanding interdisciplinary scholarship on women which might otherwise be neglected in their traditional curricula. Interested graduate students should contact the Assistant Director for the Institute for Women's Studies to submit an application and prepare an interdisciplinary program of study.
