Welcome to the Department of Political Science at the University of Georgia, which is part of the School of Public and International Affairs. Our faculty are leading scholars in their fields and award-winning teachers as well as valuable members of their communities. Currently in the department there are 20 tenured or tenure track faculty, 1 fellow, and 1 lecturer. We have 34 graduate students and over 800 undergraduate majors.

Dr. Audrey Haynes is quoted in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution regarding health reform's influence on the gubernatorial race.

The paper “Alternative Paths to the Bench: Women’s Recruitment to Become Judges in Georgia” by Dr. Charles S. Bullock III and UGA graduate student Karen Owen received the McBrayer Prize for best paper delivered at the Georgia Political Science Association Convention.

voting The Triumph of Voting Rights in the South by Dr. Charles S. Bullock III and Ronald Keith Gaddie (UGA PhD, 1993) has received the Julian J. Rothbaum Prize for best book published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

freakonomicsThe New York Times' Freakonomics blog cites Dr. Mike Crespin, Ph.D. student Emily Wanless, and Charles Finnocchiaro's (University of South Carolina) paper "Perception and Reality in Congressional Earmarks."

The Providence Journal quotes Dr. Richard Vining regarding a nominee to the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Rhode Island.

In a story about the use of earmarks, the Athens Banner Herald quotes Dr. Michael Crespin and references a paper he co-authored with Political Science Ph.D. student Emily Wanless and University of South Carolina's Dr. Charles Finocciaro.

Dr. Audrey Haynes was the 2009 winner of the Thomas P. Lauth Award for Outstanding Teaching. This award is given annually to a tenured professor in Political Science for outstanding teaching.

Dr. Daniel Kapust was the 2009 winner of the Susette M. Talarico Award for Outstanding Teaching. This award is given annually to an untenured professor in Political Science in recognition of outstanding teaching.


Dr. John Maltese was quoted at length in Politico about the practice of Supreme Court nominees maintaining public silence before their confirmation hearings. Maltese has written extensively about the federal judicial confirmation process, including the book The Selling of Supreme Court Nominees.

Congratulations to Dr. Teena Wilhelm and her co-authors Dr. Laura Langer (University of Arizona), and Dr. Gabriel R. Sanchez (University of New Mexico) on winning the "Best Paper on State Politics and Policy" presented at the 2008 APSA annual meeting in Boston. There will be a formal announcement of the award at the State Politics and Policy Section’s annual business meeting at the 2009 APSA Conference.
