CMLT (AFAM)(AFST)(LACS)(GEOG) 4260: The Black and Green Atlantic: Crosscurrents of the African and Irish Diasporas.
CMLT 4260 satisfies both the UGA Cultural Diversity, and Franklin College Multicultural requirements.
This course explores the connections that have defined the “Black and Green Atlantic” in culture, politics, race, gender, and labor. It brings together work on the comparative dimensions of Black and Irish experiences in the Atlantic world that seeks to transcend the limiting boundaries of national and even hemispheric histories. It focuses on cultural production emanating mainly from the United States, Africa, Britain, the Caribbean, and Ireland. Included are works by established and emerging scholars, in tandem with a broad range of texts––novels, autobiographies, laws, political screeds, music, plays, poetry, movies, etc. Our methodological approach will be comparative, interdisciplinary, and transnational. Dispelling spurious claims of equivalency, the course draws on comparisons between the Black and Green Atlantics that go beyond the usual “influence” model. The ultimate aim is to reach a better understanding of the divergent racialization processes at work in the nineteenth-century Atlantic world and beyond.
(A field trip to Liverpool, one of the epicenters of both the Black and Green Atlantics, is planned.)
In the remaining eight-week session, classes will be taught by Oxford faculty using the one-on-one Oxford tutorial format where students meet with their tutors in small groups and follow an intensive study course of research and writing. In more popular classes such as 'Shakespeare', students may expect to meet in a small group of 2-3 with the professor, but most tutorials are individualized. The semester curriculum at Oxford is tailored to individual student needs, so that students can make progress toward graduation while studying abroad. This accounts for the multitude of different courses offered. Besides the courses listed here we are able to offer numerous other options drawing on the rich faculty resources of Oxford University. Please contact our office if you are considering participating on a semester program and would like to discuss the possibility of taking a course at Oxford not listed here.

Dr. Vanessa Gonlin is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on colorism, interracial relationships, and racial identity(ies), emphasizing minoritized perspectives. Dr. Gonlin has published in journals such as Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and Diversity in Higher Education. An award-winning educator, Dr. Gonlin created, developed, and teaches the course Colorism and Hairism in Communities of Color, which is the first course of its kind at her university. Extending the outreach of this message, Dr. Gonlin has shared her expertise on colorism with universities such as Georgetown University in Qatar and New York University Abu Dhabi and with organizations including WebMD, Macmillan Learning, and the International Women’s Forum to facilitate understanding of the impact of colorism across multiple communities.
Course Description: This course centers two forms of discrimination - colorism and hairism - which are global phenomena yet remain highly under-discussed. The goal of this course is to understand how colorism and hairism impact multiple communities of color. Students will be able to learn about and discuss forms of discrimination that are pervasive but not often discussed – discrimination due to skin color shade and hair texture. We will use empirical data to analyze how inter- and intraracial discrimination based on skin color and hair texture and hairstyle are forms of discrimination seen in virtually every social institution. Students will learn the history and rationale behind colorism and hairism; the anti-Black sentiment that permeates these forms of discrimination; gain knowledge of contemporary research on skin tone, colorism, and hairism; and learn how to fight against these forms of discrimination.

Choice of one of two sections in INTB 5100: Topics in International Business
Section 1: Crisis and Innovation: Lessons from Finance and Tech
Dr. Poulsen – Part one will introduce students to international business and the environment within which global firms operate and the risks that these factors bring to the firm. The goal of the module is to introduce students to the implications of globalization for business firms and their managers, especially governance, risk, and compliance, and to emphasize the role of financial markets in globalization, with special attention to foreign direct investment and cross-border mergers and applications.
Dr. Huber – Part two will introduce students to a wide range of cybersecurity-related topics, especially governance, risk, and compliance, as they pertain to conducting business on a global scale. Particular attention will be paid to the role of cybersecurity and risk as they apply to global firms and the global operations of these firms. The goal of the class is to introduce students to the implications of cybersecurity on globalization for business firms and their managers and to emphasize the roles and responsibilities of individuals, organizations, and governments.
Section 2: Comparative Information Law: Speech, Privacy, and Intellectual Property from a Global Perspective
Mike Schuster – The class will initially present students with a background on domestic regulation regarding privacy, publicity, internet regulation, free speech, defamation, copyright, trademark, and patent law. Emphasis will be placed upon developing areas of the law—such as potential copyright protection for works generated by artificial intelligence. Building from this domestic basis, regulatory variations will be explored and students will be encouraged to address benefits and drawbacks associated with different countries' approaches to certain issues. For example, students will consider the economic benefits of strong or weak intellectual property enforcement (comparing the UK and the US) and the social effects of the "right to be forgotten" (e.g., have certain personal events removed from search engines) in Europe and the lack of such a right in the USA. The global nature of the course allows students to build from experiences at any study abroad location.

JRLC 5080: International Mass Communication
Students in JRLC 5080, International Mass Communication will learn about and explore the communicative making of the spatial/geographic dimensions of identities. Communications industries such as advertising, entertainment, journalism and public relations play central roles in these cultural processes. Numerous examples from these industries will be consulted, in conjunction with students’ own experiences living and studying in Oxford. Planned excursions (to be confirmed) to UK-specific locations to explore these processes include the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London—The Making of Harry Potter, and BBC Cardiff, along with major advertising and PR agencies (tbd).
Dr. Jay Hamilton studies the history, theory and practice of alternative media and democratic communication. A central goal is to develop a historicizing critique not only of specific practices of democratic communications but also of their conceptualizations and forms. His work also seeks to recontextualize, retheorize, and thus reconstitute the possibilities of democratic communications in the current era of digital media, globalization, and perpetual political, economic, and climate crises. Books include Democratic Communications: Formations, Projects, Possibilities(Lexington Books, 2008; paperback edition 2009); Alternative Journalism (Sage, 2009), which is co-written with Chris Atton (Napier University, Edinburgh, Scotland); and Explorations in Critical Studies of Advertising (Routledge, 2017), co-edited with Robert Bodle, and Ezequiel Korin.

Dr. Harrison Frye is a political theorist with a wide interest in normative political theory. He currently works on two main areas of research. First, he is interested in the morality of markets and inequality. Second, he is interested in the ethics of online public shaming. His work has appeared in journals such as Philosophy & Public Affairs, Journal of Political Philosophy, and British Journal of Political Science.
In the eight-week session, classes will be taught by Oxford faculty (known as 'dons') using the one-on-one Oxford tutorial format where students meet with their dons in small groups and follow an intensive study course of research and writing. In more popular classes, students may expect to meet in a small group of 2-3 with the professor, but most tutorials are individualized. The semester curriculum at Oxford is tailored to individual student needs, so that students can make progress toward graduation while studying abroad. This accounts for the number of different courses offered. Besides the courses listed here, we are able to offer numerous other options drawing on the rich faculty resources of Oxford University. Please contact our office if you are considering participating on a semester program and would like to discuss the possibility of taking a course at Oxford not featured in the Course List.

Dr. Cynthia Turner Camp specializes in late medieval literature and medieval religious culture. Her current research centers on English books of hours and the way that prayer and poetry, Latin and English, visual and written effects are mutually constitutive in these ubiquitous but always unique prayerbooks. Further research topics include late medieval saints' lives; community identity construction, including local and national identities; the literature and culture of late medieval monasticism; medieval historiography and understandings of time; medieval literature after Chaucer; and manuscript studies. Teaching interests also include women's literary culture and the devotional literature of the laity; she also teaches the Hargrett Hours Project courses. In 2012 she was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of London's Institute for English Studies. Her monograph, Anglo-Saxon Saints' Lives and the Writing of History in Late Medieval England (Boydell and Brewer 2015), examines the interplay of Middle English saints' lives and historical consciousness.
