Study Abroad

Eligibility

UGA students who have been awarded financial aid may receive that financial aid to study abroad in a UGA study abroad program or through an approved program sponsored by other schools or organizations.

UGA students studying abroad in UGA study abroad programs only need to meet the standard requirements to receive financial aid - no additional paperwork is required.

UGA students attending study abroad programs sponsored by other schools or organizations must complete the Office of International Education's Credit Approval Form in addition to meeting the standard requirements to receive financial aid.

HOPE Scholarship eligible UGA students studying abroad through other HOPE eligible institutions (such as other public or private schools within the state of Georgia) will also need to complete the HOPE Transient Form; we then will notify the host institution of your HOPE Scholarship eligibility and they will award your HOPE Scholarship for that term.

HOPE Scholarship eligible UGA student attending study abroad programs sponsored by schools or organizations not eligible to award HOPE will receive the equivalent of UGA tuition for the number of hours enrolled plus the HOPE book allowance. When a student is attending a non-HOPE eligible institution, HOPE regulations do not permit us to award any money for the mandatory fees, such as health and activity fees, normally paid in part by HOPE.

Disbursement

Disbursement of financial aid will take place ten days before the start of the study abroad program or UGA semester start date, whichever is later. Federal and state regulations do not permit aid to be disbursed earlier than 10 days prior to the first day of classes. If you intend to use your financial aid to pay for the program expenses, you will need to be prepared to pay for those expenses in advance and be reimbursed when the disbursement is made.

Satisfactory Academic Progress requirement

Financial aid recipients must show measurable progress toward earning a degree by successfully completing 67% of the hours they have attempted at the University plus any credit accepted for transfer. Substantial delays in posting international transfer credit are common, and may result in the temporary loss of financial aid eligibility until the University receives the grades and we are able to reconsider your Academic Progress.
