University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams gave a budget update to the UGA community during the April 23 meeting of the University Council at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. A video presentation and talking points are available for viewing.

UGA president provides budget update
University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams gave members of University Council an update on UGA’s budget Thursday, Dec. 4 in wake of recent actions by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to help meet an anticipated directive from state officials to increase the budget cut to 8 percent from the current 6 percent.

Public forum on University Budget

UGA College of Veterinary Medicine hires top immunobiologist as GRA Distinguished Investigator
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine has hired a distinguished immunobiologist as part of its infectious diseases research team expansion. Dr. Donald Harn comes to UGA as a Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Investigator. His hiring is part of a GRA initiative to recruit research scientists who are well-regarded in next-generation vaccines and therapeutics research. He is formerly a professor of immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health.

UGA College of Public Health awarded full accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health
The University of Georgia College of Public Health, founded in 2005, has been awarded full accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health. With this announcement, the college becomes one of only 41 accredited colleges of public health in the nation and the only accredited public health college in the University System of Georgia. The college joins the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University as the only two accredited colleges of public health in Georgia.

Nationwide Tour Returning to Athens in 2010 with new site: The Athens Classic at UGA will benefit need-based scholarships for UGA students
The University of Georgia and the PGA TOUR announced today that professional golf will remain in the Athens area for a fifth straight year – but with a new venue and host organization. The Nationwide Tour’s “Athens Classic at UGA” will be played at the UGA Golf Course and operated by the University’s Auxiliary Services Department. All proceeds from the event will support need-based scholarships for UGA students through the Arch Foundation.

As part of its ongoing effort to control utility costs and manage expenses as efficiently as possible, the University of Georgia Physical Plant will modify the operation of its steam plant over the summer by shutting down its coal-fired steam boiler from May 1 – Sept. 30.
