About UGA

In 1973, you were named Dean of Student Affairs, which was the top position in that area.
It was a time when a lot of heads were falling in Student Affairs. Uh, I suppose partly because of the great number of students. When I came here there were 11,000. By that time they were in their 20's. Now we are in the 30's. Campuses all over the country are growing, and the adjustments with student life cost a lot of people positions, and that happened here. Uh and then I went into Student Affairs and we had the streakers and the whole business of the sit-in over not allowing a dance, the gay dance on a Friday night. They took out a court order against us, and they were allowed to have it. The judge gave them…do you remember that ? The gays were just beginning to make a racket on campuses, and they wanted to have a dance. We still had Memorial Hall then, that was the only student center, and we turned it down, and they took us to court, and so they got issued an order against us and had it, and I remember I took all the staff and we went to the hall where they had it to try to see that there were no problems, and a lot of the people who came to it were from Atlanta, but it was quite an event and made a lot of press in the state, and then the streaking…we won the NCAA Championship in that…
