ISL Communications

International Student Life offers a weekly listserv that provides information about upcoming office events, programs and services.  It is our primary form of communication between the office and the many international students on campus as well as UGA and community members who want to know about international events throughout the year.  Additionally, the listserv also incorporates key departmental and University announcements as well as highlights international events on campus and in the surrounding area.  If you are interested in registering for the ISL listserv, please contact the office by emailing ugaisl@uga.edu to make your request.

History & Mission

As part of the University’s commitment to internationalize the UGA campus and student body, the International Student Life (ISL) Office was created in 1997 by the Division of Student Affairs.  ISL is one unit with the Department of Intercultural Affairs at UGA, and our mission statement is:

The ISL Office supports UGA’s mission to provide an environment that appreciates our interdependent global society.  It will do so by creating a welcoming space that provides opportunities for the interaction of students from the USA and other nations.  Working together with students, ISL staff will provide services for, awareness of, and education about the worldwide social and cultural issues facing UGA students.

The ISL mission is unique to the University of Georgia and incorporates the international priorities of the institution’s administration as well as the University’s strategic plan.  It also supports the philosophy and mission of the Department of Intercultural Affairs as well as the Division of Student Affairs at UGA.

ISL Facilities

As part of our mission to provide a welcoming space that supports opportunities for the interactions of students from the USA and other nations, ISL offers a lounge for UGA students on the second floor of Memorial Hall, in Room 210F.  The ISL Lounge is part of the ISL Office and is reservable for meetings and events by contacting ISL staff (ugaisl@uga.edu).   The Lounge is open during regular building hours and is also available for student usage on a first-come, first served basis if there are no reservations for the room.

The Lounge is a quiet place to study.  It also has a telephone, three computers, and a television that has access to several foreign channels. There is a VCR for people to watch and edit videos as well as magazines and newspapers from around the world which people can read while they relax on the comfortable furniture.  Office staff members also use the Lounge as a resource area for international students.  Information such as off campus housing, financial aid assistance, conversation partner programs in Athens, as well as non-resident tax information and forms are a part of the ISL Lounge.

Other Facilities

ISL works closely with UGA students and the ISL organizations to facilitate programming initiatives including cultural events and celebrations.  Information concerning locations and facilities that are available for student meetings, programs, and events can be found by visiting the Department of Campus Life’s website.

The Faces of ISL

International Student Life at the University of Georgia is a unique blend of cultures, relationships, and people who help provide an international experience for all who pass through our doors.  Without the support of many individuals, groups, community organizations, and University departments, much of what we are able to accomplish would not be possible.  As a way to thank those who support ISL events, services, and programs in so many ways, we have dedicated this section of our website to them – to recognize their hard work, passion, and tremendous support of not only ISL but of the international students at the University of Georgia.

These people, these Faces of ISL, come from everywhere in the world and are the foundation for the programs and services ISL provides to the UGA and Athens communities.  Join us as we celebrate and appreciate these very special individuals.
