TEACHING, LEARNING, AND SERVING . . .

The service activities of the Institute of Higher Education reflect the University of Georgia's commitment to the continuing advancement of higher education through the professional development of individuals as well as the strengthening of institutions.

Since its founding in 1964, IHE has been a leader in faculty development. The inaugural program, Faculty Development in Georgia, gives faculty members from institutions across the state an opportunity to continue their graduate education and earn a doctoral degree in any field of graduate study offered by the University of Georgia.

Building on this initiative, the Governor's Teaching Fellows program invites faculty from public or private postsecondary institutions in Georgia to the Institute for seminars and/or a one-year residency to pursue innovative teaching methods using emerging instructional technologies.

Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows are recent doctoral graduates from multiple disciplines at leading universities across the nation who participate in an intensive fellowship program designed to improve the teaching of undergraduate students and promoting the individual scholarship and skills enhancement of participating Fellows. The program is sponsored jointly with the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

Several consortia among higher education institutions in the region, and across disciplinary boundaries within the university, extend IHE's service to higher education by providing forums for research and policy analysis, information sharing, and institutional development. They include:

IHE's efforts in institutional development now extend beyond the university and the state; a number of international initiatives build on IHE's strong traditions of regional outreach and public service. And IHE continues to serve the higher education community through an array of seminars, conferences, lectures, and other programs.
