M. Smith Griffith Auditorium
Formal name of the auditorium in the Georgia Museum of Art. Griffith Auditorium is acceptable on first reference.

Magill Tennis Complex
Formally the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. For internal audiences, Magill Tennis Complex is acceptable on first reference. It includes the Henry Feild Tennis Stadium, the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts and the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.

magna cum laude
“With great distinction”; italicize in formal settings.

Mahler Auditorium
The larger auditorium (the smaller is Masters Hall) in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel; pronounced MAY-ler.

main library
Formal name of this building is the Ilah Dunlap Little Memorial Library. However, the commonly recognized name for the building is the main library, lower case. The library annex is the taller addition at the back of original building. Main library is acceptable on first reference.

Marine Extension Service
Not a part of Cooperative Extension but a separate program, part of the School of Marine Programs; use lower case marine extension on second reference. Includes the Marine Resources Center on Skidaway Island, which serves as the primary education facility for schools and colleges, and the extension station in Brunswick, which focuses on fishing industries.

Research unit on Sapelo Island, a unit of the School of Marine Programs.

Masters Hall
No apostrophe in the name of this auditorium in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel; it is named for Hugh B. Masters. It is the smaller Georgia Center auditorium; the larger is Mahler Auditorium.

Matthews Public Service Complex
Full, formal name is the R. Chappelle Matthews Public Service Complex. For internal audiences, Matthews Public Services Complex is acceptable on first reference. The complex includes the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel, Treanor House, the Hoke Smith Building, Hoke Smith Annex and the Fanning Building. Other buildings are planned as well.

May term
One-month academic term sandwiched between spring and summer semesters. Avoid Maymester.

McPhaul Child and Family Development Center
Provides daycare for children in the community, training for UGA students and research opportunities for students and faculty. Some of the center’s materials use the name McPhaul Children’s Center, but that is not the official name. Pronunciation: mc FALL.

National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility
A proposed federal facility to be operated by the Department of Homeland Security. Two sites on University of Georgia property are among 18 sites nationally that are vying for the facility. NBAF would conduct research that aims to protect against and respond to threats from bio- and agro- terrorism. The primary Georgia site is off College Station Road adjacent to campus and several existing federal facilities. They include the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Richard B. Russell Research Center and the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory. The secondary site is on South Milledge Avenue near Whitehall Road on the southern end of campus. Second reference: NBAF.

Lower case individual offices (see capitalization). Often the “Office of” in a formal office name can be dropped for internal audiences: The public affairs office updates the style guide each year. If lower casing the name of the office causes the sentence to be unclear (Faculty records are handled in aademic affairs), rewrite the sentence: (Faculty records are handled in the academic affairs office).

In this guide, the listed offices are alphabetized under the substantive element in the name (e.g., Office of International Affairs is under International Affairs).

The magazine, formerly known as Prism, that is published twice a year by the Office of Public Service and Outreach. Italicize or enclose in quotation marks according to the style of the publication in which the name appears.

Owens Fountain
In Owens Memorial Plaza.

Owens Memorial Plaza
Acceptable on all references in internal publications for the small plaza with fountain, flanked by Old College, Lustrat House and the administration building. Use the full, formal name, Hubert Bond Owens Memorial Fountain and Plaza, for external audiences. Owens, the founding dean of the School of Environmental Design, developed the design during the 1940s; it was constructed in his memory following his death in 1989.

Peabody Award
The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at UGA has administered the Peabody Awards program since it was established in 1940. For external audiences use the formal name, the George Foster Peabody Award, on first reference; Peabody Award is acceptable on all references for internal audiences. It ­recognizes excellence in radio, television and cable.

George Foster Peabody was a native of Columbus who gave generously to UGA in the early 20th century. While he gave no money to endow the Peabody Award in ­broadcasting, it is named in his honor. Peabody Hall is named for a different George Peabody.

Peabody Hall
UGA has had two benefactors named George Peabody—George Foster Peabody, after whom the Peabody Awards are named, and an earlier George Peabody, a New England merchant who made a fortune in trans-Atlantic trade. He died in 1869, directing in his will that his estate be distributed over a period of time to promote public education in the South. UGA received $40,000 from that estate and constructed a home for the School of Education in 1913, naming it Peabody Hall.

Performing and Visual Arts Complex
On second reference, the arts complex. The three buildings in phase one are the music building, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Performing Arts Center. Fundraising and planning for phase two—to include an addition to the museum and a new visual arts building—is under way. Do not use an ampersand in text, nor the original acronyms PAVAC or PVAC.

No hyphen; adjective only. Avoid in print the noun “­postdoc,” informal academic jargon for a postdoctoral position or research or funding, or for someone engaged in postdoctoral work.

There are three basic academic ranks: assistant professor, associate professor and professor (sometimes called “full professor”). Promotion from one level to the next depends on the candidate’s record in fulfilling assigned responsibilities of teaching, research and service; the decision is made by the candidate’s department and submitted to higher levels of the administrative structure for approval or rejection. The complex rules and policies governing the process are overseen by Academic Affairs.

A named professorship, often but not always created by and named for the donor of the funds setting up the endowment which supports it, is called a chair. Titles of named professorships are capped (Grendel Professor of Family Law); regular professorial positions are lower case (She is an associate professor of law).
