First-Year Honors Admissions

To be considered for the Honors Program, high school students must first be accepted to the University of Georgia. Students can apply to UGA either by the Early Action Application or the Regular Decision Application.

The Honors Program seeks students with a strong balance of high school grades and SAT or ACT scores, who have completed a rigorous high school curriculum to apply. While students can apply to Honors prior to admission to Georgia, Honors applications will not be evaluated until a student is officially admitted.

The application requests information about the student's academics, awards, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Students must also submit a one-page essay, a teacher recommendation, and a copy of their high school transcript with fall term grades (an unofficial copy is acceptable).

When we receive applications from students, we send out a confirmation to indicate that the application has been processed. Applications to the Honors Program must be postmarked by February 1. All applicants will be informed of their Honors application status by mid-April.

If you apply for the Foundation Fellowship and Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship, you will still need to complete the Honors Program application. All Honors Program applications are to be postmarked no later than February 1.

The first-year Honors application is available here.

*Students who have been admitted to the program will receive an Enrollment and Information Form. Returning this form reserves the student's place in the next class of Honors students. The information on this form also helps us plan our advising during Orientation. Failure to return the form will result in forfeiture of your place in the fall class of Honors students.  These forms are due no later than May 1 each year.

Current UGA students who wish to be considered for entry to the Honors Program must apply within their first year at UGA.  Other requirements include:

  • 3.75 cumulative University of Georgia GPA
  • 15 credit hours for the semester in which they are applying (14 of which must be graded A-F)

Credit hours earned through Advanced Placement, summer classes, or joint/dual enrollment courses will not be counted toward this minimum credit hour requirement.

The fulfillment of the requirements listed above does not constitute automatic admission to the Honors Program. Entry into the Honors Program is competitive. In addition to the fulfillment of the requirements listed above, applications will be evaluated based upon UGA grades, rigor of coursework, and the overall quality of the application, including a required essay.

Students must complete the application by the last day of classes for the semester in order to be eligible for acceptance. Complete applications must be received by the posted deadline. In some cases, students may not know their exact cumulative GPA before the application deadline. However, students must submit their application by deadline in order to be considered. Admissions decisions will not be made until all grades have been posted.

Students who apply for entry during the first year will be notified of the Honors decision over the semester break and given the opportunity to register for Honors classes for the following semester if accepted.

The application for Honors entry during the first year can be found here.

Transfer Entry into Honors

Students who transfer to UGA must follow transfer admissions procedures for the University of Georgia and must be accepted to the University before being considered for the Honors Program.

To be eligible for Honors, transfer students must have earned at least 30 hours of graded academic credit from their previous institution and must have at least a 3.75 transfer GPA. Transfer acceptances will be determined on a space-available basis.

Transfer students must apply to the Honors Program prior to their first term at the University of Georgia. Transfer students must complete the application by the last day of classes for the UGA semester in order to be eligible for acceptance. Complete applications must be received by the posted deadline.

The application for transfer admission can be found here.

Transfer students who enter UGA during the 2010 spring term will apply to Honors by 5:00pm on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 for admission to Honors upon their start at UGA in January.
