UGA adds Arabic language major - Around the Arch
December 2008 Issue
Starting this spring, UGA will be the first school in Georgia to offer students a major in the Arabic language. The program is the result of increased student interest in the language, and in the Middle East. There are currently 180 students studying Arabic at UGA, which offers a minor in the language. Heightened interest in the Arab world began after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Government and business have expressed a need for more employees who are fluent in the language. The program is offered through the Department of Religion in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
