Construction begins - Around the Arch March 2010 Issue UGA held a groundbreaking ceremony in January for the Richard B. Russell Building, which will be the new home of the Special Collections Library. Construction of the 115,000-square-foot building is projected to take two years and cost close to $46 million, with approximately one-third of that amount coming from private sources. The building will provide state-of-the-art storage and climate control for valuable collections, such as the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collection, and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. The building will be constructed around a 30,000-square-foot storage area with shelves that will be 30 feet high, providing an environment that will protect and preserve the materials for future generations.
