Holmes-Hunter Lecture

The 2009 Holmes-Hunter Lecture will be presented by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Leah Ward Sears.  The annual address honors the University of Georgia's first two African-American students, Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter-Gault.  The lecture will take place Thursday, April 9 at 3 pm in the Chapel.




2009 President's Fulfilling the Dream Awards

On Friday, January 16, 2009, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, Clarke County School District, and the University of Georgia joined together with the nation to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by sponsoring the Sixth Annual Freedom Breakfast.  The President's 2009 Fulfilling the Dream Awards went to four individuals who have made significant efforts to build bridges and understanding within the UGA and Athens-Clarke County community over the past year.

International students host coffee hours

The Office of International Student Life arranges weekly campus coffee hours held Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Ballroom. Students and other members of the UGA community can meet and mingle over free coffee and samplings of international foods. Depending upon the sponsor of the weekly event, cultural performances and displays are also sometimes offered.

The next Coffee Hour will be held Friday, April 3, sponsored by International Student Life and AIESEC. The purpose of the book club is to bring together students, faculty, and staff who are interested in reading popular books in the field of African American Studies. Fields Medalist David Mumford, professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, explains how, by looking at the three cultures of China, India and the West, one can 'replay' the history of math from three different starting points. Sometimes one finds that it developed with strong parallels, but sometimes with deep differences.
