CULTURAL EVENTS

Art

A variety of art exhibitions are on view throughout the year in the Visual Arts Main Gallery, Studio 2 Gallery on Broad Street, and the William Thompson Gallery of the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Faculty, students, and other invited artists are featured in month-long exhibitions. Student work from current classes is usually on display throughout the building.

In the spring, the Ceramic Students Association sponsors a sale of ceramic work by students and faculty; dates are announced in mailings and local newspapers.

A Visiting Artist and Scholar series brings to the campus each year a number of nationally known artists who present slide lectures on their work. These programs are open to the public, although seating is sometimes limited. Inquiries may be directed to the School of Art office after announcements of programs have been released. For more information, call 706-542-1511.

Dance

Dance is alive at UGA! Through several performing groups and events, the Department of Dance offers a variety of opportunities for student dancers, choreographers, and production assistants. Young Choreographer’s Series Stage One is a student directed organization and Young Choreographer’s Series Senior Concert is directed and produced by senior dance majors. Other performance groups include Ballet Ensemble and CORE Concert Dance Company, oriented toward the intermediate to advanced dancer with performances on campus and on tour, and the Ballroom Performance Group. Concert Dance Company Series presents faculty and distinguished guest artist choreography annually in the Department of Dance’s new Dance Theatre. All auditions for these companies occur during mid-August. Please contact the Department of Dance at 706-542-4415 for more information.

Drama

The production program of the Department of Drama and Theatre consists of live performances, plays on video or film, and presentations created with the aid of the computer. Live performances of classical and modern plays take place on the stages of the Fine Arts Theatre, the Cellar Theatre (both in the Fine Arts Building) and the Seney-Stovall Chapel. The Subscription Season consists of six plays during the academic year and a premiere presentation in the summer of a new play which is selected on a national search and is the work of the Georgia Repertory Theatre, a professional company associated with the Department. The Department periodically showcases its videos, films, and computer-generated images and animation.

In addition, two student-producing groups in the Department create their own productions. The Thalian-Blackfriars organization usually produces a variety show and two plays during the year. The Commedianti Georgiani is an improvisational touring company. Drama classes also do presentations all through the year. For more information on the Department’s productions or its studies abroad programs, call (706) 542-2836 or visit the website at http://www.drama.uga.edu/

Music

The School of Music presents over 250 concerts each year. Free concerts include afternoon and evening performances by students, faculty, guest artists, and organizations such as the wind symphony, glee clubs, symphony orchestra, and chamber ensembles. A nominal admission to the 2nd Thursday Concert Series benefits the School of Music scholarship fund.

Students from all departments may participate in organizations like the Redcoat Marching Band, University Chorus, and more. Courses are offered for music majors, music minors, and students majoring in any field. Call the School of Music 706-542-3737 for more information or visit www.uga.edu/music for a calendar of events.

The Office of International Education assists American and international students, scholars and faculty members with matters concerning international educational exchange. Areas of responsibility include study, work, and travel abroad, as well as immigration and individual advising for international students and exchange visitors.

Study Abroad

Study abroad is a popular option for an increasing percentage of UGA students. Students who plan ahead should be able to spend time abroad and graduate on time. With over 5000 study abroad programs available worldwide, classes are offered in virtually every major and in many diverse locations. Students who study abroad usually consider it one of the most valuable experiences of their academic career. Because most students who spend a shorter amount of time abroad wish they could have stayed longer, planning ahead will enable a student to set aside a semester or more to study abroad. Studying abroad for a semester or more is also more economical, with a much lower per day cost than a shorter 3-8 week summer program or Maymester.

Students wishing to study abroad should attend an Options Abroad Session, a 50-minute session offered three times each week, for an overview of the study abroad process and the resources available in the Study Abroad Library. Study Abroad Advisors in the OIE can offer additional help to students in narrowing their options for study abroad; assist in locating information on study abroad programs and other opportunities abroad, such as working, volunteering and academic and non-academic internships; and provide advising on financial aid, scholarships and international travel. To sign up for a session or an individual advising appointment, please call (706) 425-3274.

Students are also welcome to look for materials on their own in the Study Abroad Library on the third floor of the Bank of America building but should meet with an advisor if they find a non-UGA program that they would like to attend. The library is open from 8-5 Monday through Friday, except during the three Options Abroad Sessions.

UGA currently offers close to 100 of its own study abroad programs in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, Belize, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Fiji, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and many more, including several programs which visit multiple countries. Most of these programs are summer or Maymester programs; several offer one semester or longer programs. See the OIE web site for more information on these programs.

UGA also offers over 45 exchange programs to Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago the United Kingdom (England, Wales), and additional countries that last one semester or a full academic year. Such programs appeal to students seeking more independence and cultural immersion. Faculty from the foreign institutions teach the courses in the language of that institution (with some exceptions), so students are expected to have at least two college years of a foreign language in order to be prepared to participate in an exchange. Students attending a UGA Exchange Program pay UGA tuition, as well as airfare, housing, meals and other costs while abroad, so the cost of an exchange program abroad should be comparable to staying at UGA.

Students who attend a UGA study abroad program receive resident credit for their classes. Students who attend a non-UGA Program or a UGA Exchange program receive transfer credit for their classes and must fill out a Credit Approval Form before departure in order to receive pre-approval for the transfer of classes and to allow for disbursement of financial aid.  Students studying abroad on any pre-approved study abroad program are eligible to receive state and federal financial aid, as well as the HOPE scholarship, for their time abroad.

Students have helped to finance their study abroad programs by using scholarships such as the Board of Regents’ STARS work stipend and various program-specific scholarships. Begin planning for study abroad early in order to meet scholarship application deadlines. See the OIE web site for up-to-date information on scholarships for study abroad.

Every fall, the OIE hosts a Study, Work and Travel Abroad Fair.  Approximately 2000 students come every year to meet with representatives from 100 study, work and travel abroad organizations and programs, discuss the programs they offer, and pick up brochures.  The 2008 fair is scheduled for October 15th and 16th.  Check the OIE web site for details.

The OIE Web Site: http://www.uga.edu/oie offers information on planning for study abroad, UGA study abroad and exchange programs, transferring study abroad credit back to UGA, financial aid, scholarships, overseas travel planning, working, volunteering and interning abroad, as well as information on our abroad listserve - SISA (Students Interested in Study Abroad).

Services to International Students and Scholars

The University of Georgia is fortunate to have over 1200 international students and scholars from 122 countries represented in its diverse student body. Advisors in the Office of International Education - Immigration Services (OIE-IS) are knowledgeable and available to assist students and scholars in the F and J visa categories to comply with complex regulations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State, Exchange Visitor Program, which govern their stay while studying in the United States.

In addition to providing advice on enrollment requirements, regulations involving employment, and internships, the OIE-IS can help international students who are experiencing temporary financial need through short-term fee deferments and emergency loans. The university has a mandatory health insurance requirement for all students, and the OIE-IS manages the compliance with this regulation. The U.S. government has a mandatory insurance policy for all J Exchange Visitors as well as their dependents, and monitoring of this requirement is also administered by the OIE-IS. Students and scholars who wish to travel outside the U.S. and return to UGA will need to consult with the OIE-IS to obtain the proper visa documents prior to their departure to make sure they do not encounter any unnecessary difficulties when trying to re-enter, now that SEVIS is enforced at the points of entry. The OIE-IS dedicates one full day near the end of fall and spring semester for Signing Day.  Signing Day allows students and scholars to bring their travel documents to immediately obtain the required signatures for re-entry to the US, ask pertinent questions, enjoy refreshments and win door prizes!

A web site is maintained to provide extensive information on the variety of services and assistance available to UGA international students and scholars. This site is updated regularly to inform about changes in regulations or UGA procedures that may have an effect on their stay. The OIE-IS also periodically offers workshops to provide information and instruction to the campus community because of changes in Federal regulations that have a bearing on their particular visa status. Pre-arrival information is sent to the student or scholar to provide information to ease the transition from home country to the US and includes new information on regulatory visa related issues.

The OIE-Immigration Services area works closely with International Student Life to provide a quality orientation program for all newly admitted international and exchange students. A separate orientation is also held each month for scholars in the J visa category.

The Libraries also are creating special resources by digitizing important documents. These and many other resources are available on the Libraries’ web site (www.libs.uga.edu) and through GALILEO@UGA, the statewide electronic library (http://www.libs.uga.edu/research/).

The UGA Libraries include three facilities on campus: the Main Library, the Science Library and, the Student Learning Center, which opened in 2003 and combines 26 general instructional classrooms with a state-of-the-art Electronic Teaching Library. Campus Mail Service is responsible for providing an effective, timely and economical system of moving internal campus mail between the various offices and residence halls. Mail is picked up daily from the post office and delivered to the residence hall.  Each residence hall community has its own satellite mailroom facility and personnel who process the incoming letter mail and packages in accordance to their procedures.
Packages received, which “do not” require a signature by the United States Postal Service, such as Express Mail and Delivery Confirmation, are held in the residence hall mail room until picked up by the addressee. Residence Hall occupants are encouraged to check with their assigned hall mail rooms for policies and procedures in regards to the processing of incoming mail. Mail pieces, which “do” require a signature by the addressee by the U.S.P.S., such as insured, registered, certified and signature confirmation, shall be routed to the UGA Post Office located in the Tate Center.  Campus Mail will notify addressees when their package is received.  A picture I.D. is required when picking up mail piece at Tate Center Post Office.  The Tate Center Post Office is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  There is no window service on Saturday.  Mail may be picked up from mail boxes 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, using the street entrance.  Both small and big boxes are for rent semi-annually and annually.  Rates depend on current postal regulations.  The University of Georgia has its own zip code, 30602, used by all departments.  All residence halls have the zip code 30609 and the box holders of the Tate Post Office have zip code 30612.

Other Post Office facilities:  The main office on Olympic Drive, the downtown office at the corner of Lumpkin and Hancock Streets, the Alps Road Station, and the Georgia Square Mall office.  There is a substation at Add Rexall Drugs, 1695 S. Lumpkin Street at 5 Points.

Best Mail Practices:
* Do not mail cash through the mail. Bulldog Bucks is the way to pay for goods and services both on & off campus.  Visit the Bulldog Bucks website for further information: www.bulldogbucks.uga.edu
* When using UPS, Fed-Ex, or DHL, the sender “must” use actual street address of residence hall. The hall name will not suffice and mail piece will be returned to sender.
* When sending an important document or package to a student, send the item First Class with Certified Mail and Return Receipt.  This will provide proof of when the important document or package was mailed to the student.  It will also provide confirmation with a delivery signature of the person who received it.

Handicapped Parking:  www.parking.uga.edu/handicapparking.aspx

Parking Services oversees 20,000 parking spaces in eight decks and 157 surface lots for a customer population of over 41,000.  Allocation of these limited parking spaces is based on time of service for employees and academic hours earned at the University of Georgia for students.

REGISTRATION:  Unique to the University of Georgia is the Parking Priority System.  This system ensures an equal footing for parking assignments for different groups (students, faculty, staff, etc.) of customers.  In the spring and early summer, all parking participants register for parking choices at: www.parking.uga.edu/registration.aspx. Lots are grouped into four priority areas based on an applicant’s relationship with the University of Georgia.   Applicants will fare better by concentrating on those priority lots in which the applicant’s grouping has preference.  Students must also register motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters.  The Alternate Transportation Program (ATP) is available for those who wish to walk, ride a bike, carpool, or use the bus, and can provide some parking for customers during inclement weather.  See our web site at www.parking.uga.edu/atp.aspx for further details.

PAYMENTS:  Permits are prepaid for an academic or calendar year with payments processed through the student account system.  If the permit is no longer needed, the permit should be promptly returned and a credit for the remaining unused months will be issued to the student account system.  Citations are charged to the student account system, and until paid to the Bursars office, no academic registration will be allowed by the Bursar’s office.  Student citations must be paid at the Bursar’s Office at 223 Broad Street in University Business Office.

HANDICAPPED:  To park in a handicapped space you must have a State issued handicapped tag or placard and a valid University parking permit where you are assigned.  Campus Transit disability vans offer point to point transportation and appointments may be scheduled by calling (706) 542-7183 (Disability Services) or (706) 369-6220 (Campus Transit) for a pick up appointment to move you from your parking space to your desired location.

ENFORCEMENT:  In order to ensure space availability for our customers, Parking Services must enforce the parking regulations for all on campus.  Enforcement and monitoring of lots occurs on a routine basis from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Parking in fire zones, loading zones, yellow curbs and zones, handicap spaces, 24 hour reserved spaces, or state vehicle spaces will result in citations being issued.  Following Parking Regulations at www.parking.uga.edu/regulations.pdf will preclude citation fees which range from $15 to $150 with most at $40.  Towing and boot charges are much higher.  The ability to move within campus is limited.  Plan to use the excellent bus transit system to move around campus.

FOOTBALL AND SPECIAL EVENTS:  To accommodate the huge crowds on football Saturdays, certain procedures will be established that limit where customers can park http://www.parking.uga.edu/maps/football-parking.pdf.  Resident students, staff and faculty will be directed to park only in certain areas starting Friday night through the end of the game on Saturday.

VISITORS:  Visitors may park in pay lots located around campus at the Tate, North, South, and Carlton decks and the Ramsey center lot (see Campus Parking Map at: www.parking.uga.edu/maps.aspx)

PARKING SERVICES UPDATES:   Parking Services communicates with its customers through the University listserv system on campus and only sends messages to the assigned University of Georgia e-mail address.  Parking Services cannot  guarantee delivery of UGA e-mails forwarded to other email systems.  It is important for students to read these critical messages throughout the year to allow Parking Services to provide the best possible customer service and information.

CONTACT US:  Customers and visitors can always ask questions and clarify their parking situation through the excellent feedback system on the Parking Services website http://www.parking.uga.edu/FeedbackForm.aspx or by calling 706-542-PARK from 7:30a.m. to 10:00p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Location: 325 Pound Street
Phone: “The Bus”: 706-613-3430
“The Lift”: 706-613-3435
Website: www.athenstransit.com

Athens Transit System (ATS) is a department of the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. The system is managed through a contract with McDonald Transit Associates. ATS owns 23 full-size buses used for fixed-route transit service and five small wheelchair lift-equipped vans for service to those with disabilities. Transit routes operate throughout all areas of Athens-Clarke County. In 1991 ATS received the prestigious American Public Transit Outstanding Achievement Award as the best transit system of its size category in North America.

Fare Policy: Athens-Clarke County and the University of Georgia have an arrangement that allows University students, faculty, and staff to ride any of the regularly scheduled ATS buses free of charge upon presentation of a valid UGA photo ID. While ATS operators may not always ask to see an I.D., all students, faculty, and staff should have the I.D. available for spot checks by the bus operator or any ATS supervisor. Students, with disabilities have unlimited access to services provided by either “The Bus” or “The Lift.” Students desiring to use “The Lift” must qualify by completing a medical certification form available from ATS or the Office of Disability Services at UGA. As with the regular bus service, disabled students, faculty, and staff ride free by showing an I.D. All of the services are funded by a portion of each student’s transportation fee and other fees.

For information on fares for non-UGA riders, contact the Athens Transit System at 706-613-3430.

Catching the Bus: On campus, ATS buses stop at all campus bus stops. Students are not required to show an I.D. while buses are on campus. Off campus in the downtown area, buses stop only at marked ATS bus stops. The main transfer center is located at College and Washington Streets. Each bus route has a specific area for boarding and alighting. Signs clearly mark the boarding locations. Outside the downtown area buses may be boarded at any ATS bus stop sign.

Students, faculty, and staff must present a valid UGA I.D. card to the operator upon boarding any ATS bus off-campus.

Destination Signs: Buses have front and side destination signs which show the route number and any special route information required.

Timetables: All routes operate at least every 60 minutes with most routes operating every 30 minutes. Individual route timetables showing the areas covered and the times the buses operate are available on all buses, at the Information Center, and at the UGA Tate Student Center.

Information concerning the system is available by calling 613-3430 or on the website http://www.athenstransit.com
