Bumble Bee Nest Research
Where do North America's bumble bees like to nest? It's surprising that there is no current research describing nesting locations. Original descriptions of some of the bumble bees of the U.S. and Canada describe nesting sites, but these data are often poorly replicated and around 70 years old.

Conserving habitat that is favorable for bumble bee nests is key for conservation efforts. In an attempt to learn more about current nest preferences, Athena Anderson is conducting an online survey of bumble bee nest sites in North America. Please take her survey at the link below.

Visitor Center Renovation Nearing Completion Work which began in the Alice Hand Callaway Visitor Center & Conservatory shortly before Christmas is coming to conclusion. Construction of an interstitial floor above the café will result in two modern new classrooms. One of the classrooms will be used primarily for children’s programs while the other is designed for adults, but both classrooms can be easily reconfigured for use by either audience. Both new classrooms will have a spectacular view of the International Garden.

Renovation has allowed the removal of the large staircase in the café thereby increasing seating space. New finishes, floors, wall coverings and furnishings will give the café an updated look. Restrooms have also being added on the café level. The café will reopen with a new look.

A catering kitchen is being added on the upper level of the building to service receptions, seated dinners and other events at which food and beverage are served. Minor improvements are also being made in the gift shop.

Funding for the new classrooms was provided by the Callaway Foundation of LaGrange, Georgia, which provided original funding for the Alice Hand Callaway Visitor Center & Conservatory. The renovation updates the interior look and function of the building, the centerpiece of the Garden’s master plan. The project is scheduled for completion by early summer.
